Most people dream of having the financial freedom to stay at home with their little ones. Being a work from home mom in South Africa has become a good option for many young moms. I have several friends who are making a good living while having the opportunity to raise their own kids. The options are endless when it comes to making a living from home, but I chose to do it by becoming a freelance writer.
An Unexpected Journey
Writing is not something I ever saw myself doing. I have always had strong writing skills but it was not my favourite thing to do while I was at school or even when I was studying. I started my career path with a strong desire to become a clinical psychologist. I threw myself into my studies after school and could not get enough of learning. Fast forward a couple of years, and I had completed my Honours degree in counselling psychology.
Although I was still determined to continue in this field I needed a change of pace. That's when I decided to branch out into teaching. At the end of the day, I knew that I wanted to work with kids. I thought that a postgraduate diploma would give me fresh inspiration while still working towards my future goal. But life has a way of throwing curve balls at you. About six months after I landed a wonderful teaching job, I found out that I was pregnant.
Change Of Plans
There I was, pregnant and unsure of what I wanted to do. The one thing I knew for sure was that I could not even imagine sending my little three month old baby to school when my maternity leave ran out. Thus began a period of intense anxiety and creative thinking. I looked at all of the options but just couldn’t find something that really worked for me. Time passed and my pregnancy progressed but I still felt lost for ideas.
When Maia was born all of my concerns melted away. I knew that I was meant to be this precious little girls mamma. I would do anything in my power to stay at home with her. With a little nudging from my own mom, I started putting my thoughts into words and started my blog. From there it evolved naturally. I began looking for writing opportunities where I would be paid for my efforts. Before I knew it the work was flowing in and I started thinking of myself as a writer.
Being a work from home mom is far from easy but it is worth every second that I get to spend with my little girl. In the coming weeks, I will be sharing more of the tips and tricks that I have come across in my freelance journey. Stick around if you want to learn more. It will also mean a lot if you would like and share this post.
